Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words are short piano pieces—songlike, clear, and quietly expressive. Written across eight books, they feel like letters left on the piano: moments of travel, salon dances, lamplight reflections, and fresh air. This video presents the complete cycle, played by Italian pianist Angelo Martino, whose singing tone, balanced voicing, and easy flow let each melody breathe. Most pieces last only a few minutes—ideal for reading, study, or a calm evening.
Open with the openhearted Andante con moto and the quick lift of the Molto allegro e vivace (Op. 19b). Drift along the Venetian Gondola Songs, hear hands answering each other in the Duetto (Op. 38/6), and feel the solemn tread of the Trauermarsch (Op. 62/3). The famous La Fileuse (Spinning Song, Op. 67/4) whirls by, and the Frühlingslied—Spring Song (Op. 62/6)—smiles at the end of a long day.
