The Best of Rossini

Gioachino Rossini (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer whose dazzling operas fused bel canto lyricism with comic timing and theatrical flair. Born in Pesaro and trained in Bologna, he became a sensation in his early twenties with L’italiana in Algeri and Tancredi; The Barber of Seville (1816) and La Cenerentola (1817) sealed his fame and popularized the trademark “Rossini crescendo.” He wrote for the stages of Venice, Naples, and Rome, and for Milan’s La Scala, and from 1824 worked in Paris, where he led the Théâtre-Italien. His final stage work, the grand French opera Guillaume Tell (1829), crowned a meteoric career after which he largely retired from opera. Later years yielded refined sacred and salon music—the Stabat Mater, the Petite messe solennelle, and the witty Péchés de vieillesse—composed amid celebrated Parisian salons with his wife Olympe Pélissier. He died in Passy in 1868, revered as the genial architect of nineteenth-century comic opera.
